AISI 2714

GENERAL

The GGD 2714 steel main characteristic has high impact on the recommended hardness range. In most cases it is already provided in the hardened and tempered condition, requiring no subsequent heat treatment. In this case, the hardness can be adapted to customer needs.

Chemical composition: C (0,55) | Si (0,25) | Mn (0,45) | Cr (1,00) | Mo (0,45) | Ni  (1,65) | V (0,10)

Supply conditions – Supplied in the annealed condition with a maximum hardness of 240 HB. Provided in the temperate state and tempered with hardness between 35-43 HRC.

APPLICATIONS

It is used for hot work tools, particularly for arrays designed to forging hammer type presses and peripheral components. It is also used in arrays of sets of containment rings for the extrusion of aluminum alloys and other matrices for working nonferrous alloys such as gravity casting.

HEAT TREATMENT

Stress relief: In tools of complex shapes, with heterogeneous material removal in roughing, sudden changes in sections, etc., should be carried out treating strain relief to minimize dimensional variations and form during the quenching and tempering. Treatment should be done at the temperature of 600 ° C for at least 1 hour for every 25 mm. Cool slowly in the oven to 300 ° C and then in still air.


Temper: During the heating to the austenitizing should be performed a pre-heating to ensure temperature uniformity and minimize distortions. Preheat at temperature of 650 ° C. Austenize at a temperature between 850 – 900C. Heat for 1 hour for each 25 mm thick and add 1 additional hour for each 25 mm. Cool preferably in oil, pre-warmed with stirring. The quenching in nitrogen pressure, vacuum furnaces or air should be considered by the size, shape and equipment capacity and should be considered by executing heat treatment.


Tempering: It must be done immediately after hardening when the temperature reaches about 70 ° C. The tempering temperature should be selected according to the specified hardness. For this use the tempering curve for guidance below. Keeping the tempering temperature for at least 1 hour for each 25 mm thick and used at least double tempering. This steel can be tempered to hardness of 35-43 HRC.

Quenching from 850 ° C.
Double tempering of 2 hours each.


Nitriding: The steel can be nitrided to increase the wear resistance of the surface hardening. In the case of steel GGD 1.2714 nitriding can lead or not to the formation of White Layer. The maximum hardness after nitriding is in the range of 900 – 1000HV.
